UGC urges universities to promote apprenticeship, internship-embedded degree programmes

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has urged universities to promote apprenticeship, internship embedded degree programmes in universities and affiliated colleges and institutions.
The UGC also requested universities that have been already offering such apprenticeship, internship embedded degree programmes to share the relevant information by October 10. The commission has also provided a link to a Google Form to be filled by the university. Click here to share the details.
The apprenticeship, internship embedded degree programmes have been developed by UGC in line with the Budget announcement of 2020-21 and “with the objective of making the fresh graduates employment-ready with necessary knowledge, competencies and attitude.”

Last year in August, former education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ launched the UGC guidelines for higher education institutions (HEIs) to offer apprenticeship/ internship embedded degree programme.
In a letter, issued in December last year, the UGC said, “The minimal linkage between the general degree curriculum and employer's requirement calls for an effective remodelling of degree programmes, driven by changing needs of the industry and service sector. Apprenticeship and internship can play a significant role in this context.”
