521 SWAYAM courses available in 8 regional languages: Education Minister

NEW DELHI: The study material on the central government’s e-learning platform, SWAYAM is being translated into eight regional Indian languages for students in rural areas.
The Massive Open Online Course, or MOOC, platform has so far, 521 courses translated into vernacular languages, the Union education minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ informed Lok Sabha on Monday. The highest number, 130 courses, have been translated into Hindi followed by Tamil with 94 courses.
The online courses on SWAYAM are also available in other languages including Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Telugu.
In May last year, the All India Council for Technical Education, or AICTE, had invited applications from teachers and students who have completed SWAYAM courses to translate the courses.

The online platform offers a wide range of online courses in disciplines such as science, engineering, humanities, social sciences, law, management among others.
The aim is to facilitate easy access to education for students particularly from rural areas and in respect of fundamental prerequisite technical courses of first-year or courses in which failure rate is high, an official letter by Anil Sahasrabuddhe said.
