Assam education minister said that the cooperative management institute runs with only 54 students and three departments, and will be merged.
NEW DELHI: The Assam government has decided to merge Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperation and Management (ARGUCOM) with the recently upgraded Sibsagar University, announced state education minister Ranoj Pegu, on social media. The decision was taken during a review meeting of the merger.
The education minister said that the ARGUCOM has been operating with three departments and 54 students only, which has made it unsustainable. During the review meeting, Pegu also discussed with officials the modalities of merger and decided to relocate the faculties of the university to Sibsagar University.
The minister said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), “Today, I held a review meeting regarding the merger of Assam Rajib Gandhi University of Cooperation and Management (ARGUCOM) with Sibsagar University at my office. ARGUCOM has been operating with six faculties across three departments and only 54 students, making it unsustainable. To address this, we have decided to merge it with the newly upgraded Sibsagar University, formerly Sibsagar College (Autonomous).”
“We discussed the modalities of this merger, ensuring that the interests of current students will be fully protected and the faculties will be relocated to Sibsagar College,” he said.
Interestingly, the education minister recently refused any plans of merging colleges with low student enrolment. He had previously asked the higher education department to draft a policy for college merger on the lines of school merger.
