Bihar to have first-ever engineering university soon, says technology minister: Report

Sumit Kumar said 33% seats in each category will be reserved for female students in all colleges to be affiliated to the university.

NEW DELHI: Bihar science and technology minister Sumit Kumar Singh said that a full-fledged engineering university will start soon in the state, according to a Times of India report. The university will help improve engineering education in Bihar, it said.

While releasing a progress report of the science and technology department on February 26, Singh reportedly said that 33% seats in each category will be reserved for female students in all colleges to be affiliated to the university. The state government has sanctioned 32 posts for the university, he said.

“At present, there are 51 engineering colleges, including 13 private institutions in the state which will now be governed by the engineering university,” Singh was quoted as saying.

Singh also informed that the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) is conducting a recruitment process and will appoint around 2,806 posts of teachers including principals in engineering colleges along with 1,623 posts in polytechnics, as per the report.

He said that the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna has been appointed as the knowledge partner as well as the implementing agency of a centre of excellence which will provide training to students of polytechnics in modern technologies such as drone technology, electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, robotics, etc., according to the report.

Further talking about engineering education in Bihar, the minister reportedly said that a placement cell has been formed for conducting the placements of engineering students in the state.
