CBSE introduces remote exam system to evaluate school counsellors’ skills; 10,000 to be assessed in phases

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)launches an online remote invigilation exam, or proctored assessment, for school counsellors to strengthen student support systems across its affiliated schools. The move is part of the board’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of counselling and wellness services provided to students.

The assessment will be conducted in phases and is expected to cover around 10,000 school counselling and wellness teachers (socio-emotional counsellors). The first phase is already done in February 2026. Schools have been asked to ensure that nominated counsellors should appear for the test as per the board’s schedule.

Unlike traditional exams, this assessment is designed to go beyond textbook knowledge. It will evaluate counsellors on practical skills, ethical understanding, and how effectively they can handle real-life situations involving students. The aim is to ensure that counsellors are better prepared to respond to students’ emotional and mental health needs.

CBSE brings in AI-based platform for assessments

The exam is being conducted on an AI-enabled platform called DIGI-EXAM, which allows candidates to take the test remotely while maintaining strict monitoring. This makes the process more flexible and accessible, while also ensuring transparency and fairness in evaluation.

CBSE said the initiative is designed to build a secure and scalable digital assessment system, ensuring integrity, consistency, and credibility in evaluation. It also promotes equitable access through remote participation and aligns with national digital education goals and global best practices.

CBSE focuses on improving counselling standards

With this step, CBSE is looking to bring more consistency and credibility to how school counsellors are assessed. Schools have also been advised to regularly update counsellor details on the OASIS portal, as nominations for the exam will be based on this data.
