COVID-19: Delhi University exploring syllabus cut

NEW DELHI: After the syllabus-cut at the school level, at least some universities are beginning to consider reducing the coursework for college students as well.

Delhi University may consider docking the syllabus for its courses for the upcoming academic session to make up for teaching time lost due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

DU officials recently had an “informal meeting” on this during the discussion on the upcoming academic session, which is likely to begin in September. “We had an informal discussion on this, and yes the university is exploring the possibility of syllabus reduction,” said a DU official close to the development.

He said that this is being done so that it does not put too much pressure on the students during the upcoming semester as the admissions will begin only by the end of September. Till last year, the new session would begin by July 15. Typically, DU holds its first semester examinations of the year in November-December.

Online registration for various programmes is still open at DU and the cut-offs are likely in August. It could be the end of September before the admission process is complete and classes could begin as late as October, leaving very little time to cover the first semester syllabus. This has prompted the university administration to explore the possibility of reducing the content.

However, syllabus reduction will not be that easy for the university as it follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) -- a course structure and curriculum designed by the central body, University Grants Commission. “DU follows CBCS and syllabus reduction can only happen after approval from the UGC,” said the DU official..

The university is also looking at the possibility of reducing the duration of the winter vacation and continuing teaching-learning in a blended mode, offline and online, to complete the syllabus. The university is also waiting for the fresh academic calendar from the UGC.
