Recently, the Maharashtra government set up a seven-member committee to review 38 sainik schools that receive government aid but are privately managed. Headed by the joint director of the state board’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, the panel will examine the revised sainiki schools policy introduced in October 2024 and suggest measures to improve their functioning.

The new Sainik Schools will start from Class 6, following the framework of existing schools, and their curriculum will emphasize on patriotism, Indian culture.
The Ministry of Defence has approved 86 new Sainik Schools under the Government of India’s initiative to set up 100 such institutions across the country in the public-private partnership (PPP) mode. The plan is being implemented by the Sainik Schools Society and aims to involve NGOs, private entities and state governments.
According to the ministry, the selection process has so far been conducted in three rounds. However, it was noted that some states, including the one addressed in the official communication, either did not submit applications or their proposals did not qualify.
States flagged for non-qualification
“I am delighted to convey that as of now, 86 New Sainik Schools have been approved by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, in three rounds for inviting applications for the opening of New Sainik Schools under Public -Private Partnership mode. However, it has been observed that some of the states, including your state, either had not applied for or applied but none of their applications were found fit by the Approval Committee,” the official circular said.
The new schools will begin from Class 6 and follow the academic and administrative framework of existing Sainik Schools. The curriculum will also include value-based education with emphasis on patriotism and Indian cultural traditions.
