In a letter to the vice chancellor, DTF said it learnt that the VC had “publicly announced the renaming” of the college last month during a public function. The teachers’ body argued that renaming DU colleges falls within the “purview of the executive council of Delhi University,” and not through unilateral administrative steps.
DTF said it had received a staff association resolution of Dyal Singh (Evening) College from an emergency meeting held on January 8, 2026. The letter claimed the college governing body, “in collusion with the office of the Principal,” sent the renaming proposal to the university on December 5, 2025, without discussion in the statutory Staff Council.

Teachers say stakeholders not consulted
DTF flagged that the “primary stakeholders — teachers, non-teaching staff and students — were not consulted” before moving the proposal. The letter also pointed to a lack of deliberation in statutory bodies, saying the matter should not be advanced without formal discussion and approvals at the university level.
The letter also flagged that similar efforts were made in 2017 to rename the college but were dropped after “massive resistance” both inside and outside the institution.
DTF demanded that the university administration “immediately stop” the renaming process and called for an “immediate unconditional withdrawal” of the proposal. It also raised apprehensions about the legal feasibility of renaming and voiced concern that the move could be linked to plans for bifurcation or relocation of the college.
