NEW DELHI: Dr DY Patil Medical College, Hospital and research centre launches the first advanced and basic life support in Obstetrics (ALSO and BLSO) course in collaboration with American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).

The advanced life support in obstetrics course is an evidence-based, multidisciplinary training programme that enables a maternity care team with skills to manage obstetric emergencies. The main aim of the course includes training candidates in emergency obstetric conditions, patient safety, teamwork, communication skills and conducting scenarios on simulators.

The ALSO course takes a team-based approach in physicians, residents, nurse midwives, registered nurses, and other members of the maternity care team to bring a positive impact on maternal outcomes. The stimulation training procedures reduces chance of human error and helps in enhancing capabilities in managing obstetric emergencies.

A total of 30 participants including obstetricians, post-graduates, interns, doctors, nurses, and midwives were trained in the advanced and basic life support course over the last three days. The participants received training in five skills domains of obstetric emergencies with high and low-fidelity simulators using mnemonics and performed all maneuvers with repetition.

ALSO is a blended course conducted 4 times a year with 20 seats available for candidates in each basic and advanced course. It is a three-day course split in a blended format that gives the content and curriculum to participants online. After this, an online test is conducted then the participant can attend the skill training program in the advance and basic courses at the Dr DY Pati Vidyapeeth (DPU) skill lab for one day.

Dr DY Pati Vidyapeeth, chancellor, PD Patil said: "It is indeed a moment of pride for us at DPU to collaborate with AAFP in commencing the advanced and basic life support course at our institute at our very own modern skills lab which is having all the low and high-fidelity simulators installed for different faculties of medicine and is of great benefit to our students as well as teachers. This type of training will have a positive impact on the aptitudes of course participants, and consequently on patients and organizations. We at DPU will strive for reaching the United Nations goal of reducing maternal mortality by conducting the advanced and basic life support in obstetrics courses thereby strengthening our emergency care services in our hospital."
