NEW DELHI: With registration for admission closed, a total of 2.87 lakh students now await the first list of minimum scores for admission in Delhi University colleges. While the date for the first DU cut-off list 2021 is yet to be formally announced, admission officials earlier told the press that the first list can be expected around October 1 as by then, the Central Board of Secondary Education’s improvement and compartment exams will be over.
Over the intervening month, DU colleges will set their first cut-offs. DU admission 2021 will be on the basis of the candidates’ board exam results. Each candidate’s scores in the four subjects (three in the case of science) they did best in in the Class 12 board exams are considered. The best four must include a language; for the best three for the sciences, no language score is necessary.
The minimum best-four-subjects percentage at which a college grants admission to an undergraduate programme is the “cut-off percentage”. Described below is the process colleges will follow for DU admission 2021.
DU Cutoff 2021: A guide
Each college announces its own cut-offs on its website. Separate cut-offs are set for each subject and each category of student — those taking admission under unreserved, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Economically Weaker Section and Persons with Disabilities quotas.
Some colleges may also offer different cut-offs for different combinations of subjects under the BA, BCom and BSc Programmes that are not honours courses in single disciplines but teach a mix of different disciplines.
While detailed cut-off lists are made available on the college websites, these are also compiled into masterlists for all colleges by the Delhi University administration. The DU cut-off lists will be posted also on the DU website.
Technically, a registered candidate applies to all colleges where they are eligible. The cut-off list is what finally determines where they can study. Humanities and commerce candidates check in which college their own best-four-subjects percentage meets or exceeds the cut-offs. Similarly, science candidates see where their best-three-subjects scores meet the cut-offs.
DU Cut-offs 2021: Additional eligibility criteria, other riders
In the case of some subjects, there may be additional criteria. For example, to study economics in DU, the candidate needs to have studied mathematics till Class 12.
Then, DU discourages change of stream from senior secondary school to college by docking 2.5 points from the candidate’s best-four percentage if they are applying in a subject they have not studied in school. For example, if a candidate has a best-four-subject percentage of 99% and applies to psychology, DU will consider their score to be 96.5% instead. This reduced score will have to match the cutoffs for admission.
DU Admission: Online process
The admission process for DU colleges is now entirely online, including the verification of documents.
Candidates will have to register on the college websites and upon verification of their applications, a payment link will be generated. Payment will also be online.
Candidates will have to use the unique login ID generated at registration throughout the process and they can be asked to appear in person by the university or college as any point for verification of their documents.
Second, third DU cut-off lists: Admission, withdrawal
Following the announcement of a cut-off list, DU gives candidates a few days to find college seats and take admission. However, the first DU cut-offs are always very high — a precaution colleges take to prevent over-admission.
Colleges gradually reduce cut-offs in successive lists although the best-known ones typically close admission for popular courses and for all categories by the second or third list. Candidates who were unable to take admission in a college of choice on the first cut-off may find themselves eligible on the second. In that case, they can withdraw their admission from the college, get their fee refunded, and secure admission in another college. They may even change subjects if they find cut-offs dropping in a course they wanted.
DU Admissions 2021: New courses
Fifteen colleges of Delhi University are going to start new undergraduate programmes. Two colleges are going to increase the number of seats on the existing courses. Together, they will add over 600 seats to the existing 69,554 seats offered by DU colleges for DU admission 2021.
