Extend 52% reservation for OBCs in admission, employment: AIOBCSA writes to PM Modi

NEW DELHI: All India OBC students association have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting to conduct caste census and extend 52 percent reservation to socially and educationally backward classes in admissions and employment.

On behalf of the association, the Gowd Kiran Kumar, President, AIOBCSA in a letter to PM Modi said, “We request you conduct Caste Census and extend reservations to Social and Educational Backward Classes according to their Social and Educational backwardness percentage. The Caste Census is a historical due, and the Country has not conducted a full-fledged Caste Census after 1931.”

Stating that it will be a “historical opportunity” for the government to take favourable decisions for the backward class and understand the situation better, it further said, “The data will also help the government make effective policy decisions for designing and implementing social welfare schemes for OBCs.”

“We strongly believe that all except OBCs, other social categories are getting their due share of reservation. This fact will strongly impact the future of OBCs,” it added.

“We strongly feel that you will be remembered for conducting the Caste Census as one of the champions of social justice in the hearts of OBCs. If we are not conducting Caste Census, we will lose a historical opportunity to empower OBCs,” the letter said.

The OBC students group has been demanding for proper implementation of OBC reservation in universities. In September, the group addressed Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in a letter and demanded implementation of 27% OBC reservation in All India Quota (AIQ) seats of state agricultural universities. It also requested PM Modi in January for OBC quota in law colleges claiming that reservation criteria are not implemented properly.
