Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi organised a summer bootcamp titled “Change Makers 2025 Summer Bootcamp” in the month of June. It was a three-week summer camp conducted in the hybrid mode. Participants were students from Classes 11-12, as well as first-year undergraduate (UG) students, who were given full access to the institute’s Research and Development (R&D) facilities.

At the IIT Delhi bootcamp, students received mentorship from industry experts, faculty, staff, students and Change Makers alumni of the institute. Participants made use of the Makerspace and the Centre for rural development and technology on the IIT Delhi campus. The camp included experiences like a cleanliness drive, a nature walk, and “participatory design workshop for climate action”.

All 106 participants of the IIT Delhi camp formed 18 teams to work on projects related to various environmental issues. The given topics included carbon emissions, air pollution, water pollution, drinking water contamination, heat waves, plastic waste management, waste segregation, microplastics in water and soil, crop waste management, tackling e-waste, water scarcity, and unsustainable behaviours related to food waste.

The IIT Delhi summer camp concluded with an exhibition of all the prototypes created by the teams to tackle these issues.

Given below are some of the prototypes built for pressing environmental issues, along with the respective team names.

  • Team Aeronova: Smart exhaust emission controller to tackle vehicular pollution
  • NeerVeer: Soil parameter sensing App to reduce over irrigation in farms
  • Segrenation: AI-powered smart bin to segregate recyclable and non-recyclable waste
  • Solaris: Solar suitcase for use of clean energy in remote areas
  • Aqua Nova: Reducing phosphates & nitrates in Yamuna water using an algal photo bioreactor

IIT Delhi Camp: Students talk

The summer camp of 2025 at IIT Delhi left the participants satisfied, as seen from the reviews. Syed Mohammad Abbas Haidry, first-year (UG) student from Fergusson College, Pune, enjoyed working at the Makerspace to make a solar suitcase and communicating with the professors and mentors, said an official statement.

“We are very happy that the students were able to work on an environmental problem of their choice and learned to apply the design thinking process for ill-defined problem solving to come up with innovative solutions, appreciated by all,” commented Jay Dhariwal, faculty coordinator, Change Makers 2025 Summer Bootcamp, IIT Delhi.
