IIT Roorkee, Niigata University Japan launch double degree PhD programme

NEW DELHI : The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee in partnership with Niigata University Japan has launched a double PhD programme marking a new collaboration between India and Japan. The director of IIT Roorkee KK Pant and dean of Graduate School of Science and Technology Matsuo Masayuk signed an agreement to establish the partnership.

“The double degree programme opens new pathways for students to engage in high-impact research and contribute to both nations' academic and scientific communities of India and Japan,” the IIT Roorkee statement said.

KK Pant the director of IIT Roorkee said: “This collaboration reflects our commitment to global academic engagement. The double degree programme will enhance students’ research capabilities and further strengthen our academic and research ties with Niigata University.”

The agreement discussion was started by the visit of Tatsuo Ushiki the president of Niigata University, to IIT Roorkee, where discussions were started to strengthen the academic ties between India and Japan.

Additionally, a delegation from IIT Roorkee, including KK Pant the director of IIT Roorkee, Vimal Chandra Srivastava the dean of international relations, Akshay Dvivedi the dean of sponsored research and industrial consultancy, Sandeep Singh form th department of earth sciences, and P Gopinath from the department of biosciences and bioengineering visited Niigata University to for academic collaboration, and lay a foundation for the partnership.

IIT Roorkee, Niigata University Japan partnership

The PhD programme is for doctoral students to pursue degrees from IIT Roorkee and Niigata University, and offering academic and research opportunities to scholars. The partnership facilitates exchange of students and researchers, access to educational resources, mentorship, and promotes holistic development of scholars.

According to the IIT Roorkee statement, the areas of research includes artificial intelligence and machine learning ; energy systems and renewable technologies; sustainability and climate change ; advanced materials and nanotechnology; earthquake engineering, water resources and hydrology; information and communication engineering; biosciences and biotechnology; robotics and automation; disaster resilience and mitigation and earth and environmental sciences; addressing global challenges.

Matsuo Masayuki the dean of the Graduate School of Science and Technology at Niigata University said: “We are excited to work with IIT Roorkee on this programme, which will nurture talented researchers and contribute to addressing global challenges through joint efforts.”
