Try NowNEW DELHI: Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have decided to do away with the relaxation of Class 12 board exam marks in the Joint Entrance Examination-Advanced (JEE Advanced 2023) admission, as per the Indian Express report. The IITs had in 2020 relaxed the Class 12 performance criterion for admission as several boards declared result based on alternate assessment criteria.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, students of general category who have minimum of 75% marks in Class 12 and SC, ST candidates who have secured minimum of 65% or secure a place in the top 20 percentile of the board results were eligible for admission in BTech and integrated postgraduate programmes in engineering at IITs.
According to the JEE 2020 brochure, students irrespective of their score in Class 12 had to pass exams in physics, chemistry, mathematics and a language, in addition to another subject. This was applicable for the pandemic year.

The report said that the decision to reinstate the Class 12 performance criterion was taken after the Joint Admission Board (JAB) met last month. Bringing back the criterion means that the students will have to fulfill the Class 12 eligibility criteria even if they score better marks in JEE Advanced to get admission in IITs.
“As normalcy has returned in board exams and schools started covering the full syllabus again, the qualifying criterion in JEE (Advanced) regarding board marks is going to go back to its original format,” the JAB told the Indian Express.
