India bags 3 gold, 2 silver medals at International Physics Olympiad 2025

Five Indian students have achieved remarkable success at the 55th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2025, held in Paris, France. Three students – Kanishk Jain, Snehil Jha, and Riddhesh Anant Bendale – have won gold medals, and the other two – Aagam Jignesh Shah and Rajit Gupta bagged – silver medals.

A total of 415 students from 87 countries participated in the International Physics Olympiad 2025. Five more countries participated as observers, making it one of the largest IPhOs till date.

Gold medalists Kanishk Jain is from Pune, Maharashtra, Snehil Jha from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Riddhesh Anant Bendale from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and silver medalists Aagam Jignesh Shah is from Surat, Gujarat and Rajit Gupta from Kota, Rajasthan.

According to the official TIFR, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) statement, this was India's 26th appearance at the IPhO. For all these years, early 42% Indian students have won gold medals, another 42% silver, 11% bronze, and 5% honourable mentions. In the last ten years, all Indian students at IPhO have won either gold (58%) or silver (42%) medals.

International Physics Olympiad 2025

In the country-wise medals tally, the United States of America (USA) was at the top with five gold medals, while India was at 5th position jointly with Taiwan, Japan, and Russia participating under the Olympiad flag. Additionally, South Korea, China, and Hong Kong jointly held the second position with 4 gold and 1 silver medal each.

Two Indian leaders, including Sitikantha Das from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and Vinayak Katdare, retired faculty from D G Ruparel College, Mumbai, with two scientific observers, Amruta Sadhu from St Xavier's College, Mumbai, and Vivek Lohani from Robert Bosch GmbH, Germany, attended the event.

The success is a testament to the efforts of the Physics Olympiad cell, external teachers, and mentors who trained the students during orientation and pre-departure camps at HBCSE.

HBCSE remains the nodal centre for training and shortlisting students to represent India at various International Olympiads for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy and Astrophysics. The National Olympiad Examinations conducted by HBCSE serves as the gateway for final team selection.
