JIPMER 2019 prospectus introduces changes in MBBS entrance exam; read details here

NEW DELHI, March 12: In keeping with the recently introduced reservation policy for Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has reserved 13 seats for the candidates belonging to the low-income group. The seats have been reserved from a total of 200 seats available in the MBBS program. 10 seats have been reserved in the JIPMER, Puducherry campus and 3 seats in the Karaikal campus. This year, there is also a decrease in the requisite qualifying marks in Class 12 to be considered eligible for appearing in the entrance examination.

EWS reservation criteria

On February 14, the government of India had introduced 10 per cent reservation for EWS candidates belonging to general category. The reservation benefits have been extended to only those candidates who do not belong to any other reserved category like SC, ST or OBC. The prospectus specifies that the gross family income of candidates applying for EWS reservation must be lower than 8 Lakh in order to be considered eligible. The income, as mentioned in the prospectus, includes income from all sources i.e. salary, agriculture, business, profession, etc. for the financial year prior to the year of application. Candidates who will qualify the examination through merit will not be considered for the EWS seats.

Qualifying marks

As of this year, candidates belonging to unreserved and EWS category need to score 10% less than last year which is at least 50% marks combined in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or biotechnology. Unlike like last year, for candidates belonging to SC, ST and OBC including the PwD candidates in this category, the qualifying marks is 40% instead of 50%. PwD candidates belonging to general category need to secure 45% of marks in the said subjects in order to be considered eligible.

Exam cities

The candidates can choose 3 exam cities out a total of 120 cities that have been listed in the prospectus. However, exam cities have been replaced in the state of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. In Tamil Nadu, Vellore has been replaced by Tiruvannamalai and in West Bengal, Burdwan has been replaced with Bishnupur.

The registration process for the JIPMER MBBS has begun on March 6, 2019, and will remain available for the candidates till April 12. The prospectus has been released along with the release of the application form.
