Kanpur University opens PhD environmental sciences admissions after 25-year gap; offers 12 seats

Kanpur University: CSJMU’s PhD environmental sciences course offers students an opportunity to study global environmental challenges and provide research-based solutions
The Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU) Kanpur has opened admissions for PhD in environmental sciences for the academic year 2026-27. Kanpur University offers 12 seats for admission to the PhD in environmental sciences course.
According to the Kanpur University’s press release, the department of environmental sciences is opening PhD admissions in environmental sciences for the first time in 25 years.
While talking about the new course, CSJMU’s vice chancellor Vinay Kumar Pathak said that the PhD programme in environmental sciences will offer students an opportunity to research global environmental challenges and share socially useful knowledge. The dean of research and development Cell at the Kanpur University , Namita Tiwari, said that the launch of the PhD programme in environmental sciences will provide students and researchers with an opportunity to scientifically study environmental challenges and develop innovative solutions.
The new programme will encourage multidisciplinary and innovation-based research, aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, Tiwari said.

CSJMU: New PhD course
Under the new PhD programme, researchers will have the opportunity to research important topics such as climate change and its impacts, air and water pollution control, environmental biotechnology, biodiversity conservation, natural resource management, waste management and recycling, environmental health, water conservation and water quality studies, sustainable development and green technology, and environmental impact assessment.
The dead of R&D Cell stated that a wide range of employment and career opportunities are available for PhD researchers, including assistant professors, scientists, and research guides in higher education institutions, experts in various government agencies including the Ministry of Environment, Pollution Control Board, Forest Department, and Water Resources Department, environmental compliance experts in industry and the corporate sector, and research and consulting roles in international organisations.
Additionally, leadership roles can also be obtained in non-governmental organizations involved in environmental protection, water conservation, community development, and biodiversity conservation.
Draupadi Yadav, the coordinator of the department of environmental sciences, stated that the department's objective is to develop students' scientific understanding of environmental problems and encourage a research-based approach to their solutions.
Over the last two decades, the department has conducted several academic and research activities on topics such as air pollution, water pollution, solid waste management, biodiversity conservation, climate change, natural resource management, and sustainable development, Yadav adds.
