KCET 2021: Karnataka Govt to decide on considering only CET, NEET scores for admission, says report

NEW DELHI: The Karnataka deputy chief minister, CN Ashwath Narayan, said that the government may soon take a decision on considering only KCET and NEET marks for admissions to the future courses, The News Minute reported. The state authorities have already cancelled Pre-University examinations (PUC 1 and PUC 2) for the current session due to the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the report, the Karnataka deputy chief minister and minister of higher education, CN Ashwath Narayan, said, “The suggestion given by primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar to consider only marks obtained in CET and NEET for admission to professional courses will be considered and a decision will be taken soon.”

The decision to skip considering PUC 2 marks for admission to professional courses is being reviewed as the exams have been cancelled due to COVID-19. However, considering scores of only CET and NEET will require amendment in the existing Act (for conduct of KCET as state examination). Along with the Karnataka state chief minister, this aspect will be discussed with legal experts as well. Thus, the announcement in this regard will take some time.

For admissions through Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET), candidates should have passed PUC or Class 12 or any other equivalent examination as per the CET eligibility criteria. Candidates belonging to unreserved category should have scored at least 45% marks in the qualifying examination, however, the minimum marks are relaxed to 40% in case of SC, ST, Category-I and OBC (2A, 2B, 3A and 3B) category candidates. However, now that PUC exams are cancelled in Karnataka as a precautionary measure against further spread of COVID-19 pandemic, the criteria can not be followed per se for admissions.

About KCET

The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) conducts Common Entrance Test (a state level exam) for admissions to various undergraduate courses. KCET 2021 is scheduled to be conducted on August 28 and 29. The authorities are expected to release the KCET application form 2021 anytime soon.
