NIOS relaxes 50% in Class 12 eligibility criteria for DELEd admissions; clears Not Certified cases

NEW DELHI : The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has relaxed the minimum eligibility criteria of 50% marks in Class 12 for admission to Diploma in Elementary Education (DElEd) programme. NIOS has also changed the minimum eligibility criteria to Class 12 pass. The Northern Regional Committee of the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) took the decision to clear the Not Certified (NC) cases wherein many elementary teachers had been declared 'Not Certified' despite completing their course.

“NRC considered the case of NIOS in its 372nd Emergent meeting held on July 27, 2022 and the NRC decided that the condition, “Any requirement of minimum eligibility criteria for admission to DElEd programme, that is, 50% marks in Class 12 to the extent that those who do not fulfill this requirement shall be allowed to take provisional admission to the programme of NIOS” is hereby relaxed and substituted as “the minimum eligibility for admission to DElEd programme shall be PASS in senior secondary (Class 12),” read an official statement from NIOS.

This relaxation is only for all the candidates who have cleared the DElEd within the timelines. It will be a one-time relaxation given only to the in-service elementary teachers for clearing the Not Certified (NC) cases, it added.

In the year 2020, several NIOS DElEd candidates had complained that they had not received NIOS certification despite completing the course. The teachers urged the Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resolve the issue which arose as they could not update their marks. According to those candidates, the clause of 50% marks criteria was introduced 10 months after the completion of their programme.
