NEW DELHI: National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bengaluru has decided to reserve 10 additional seats for Karnataka students in exchange for seven acres of land from Bangalore University, according to various media reports. Starting from the next academic year, the supernumerary seats will be available in the BA LLB programme. The reserved seats are in addition to the existing 25% horizontal reservation, the reports claimed.
The law school will acquire land at the BU’s Jnanabharati campus for expanding its Bengaluru campus. The area has been allotted on a 30-year lease agreement, as per reports.
The state higher education minister M C Sudhakr told the media that the Karnataka government didn’t want to give the land for free. They asked for 15 seats for home state students in the NLU, Sudhakar was quoted as saying; however, the law university settled at 10.
The law school also asked for 16 acres of land but the state government closed the deal at seven only, the reports said. The executive council of NLSIU passed the proposal followed by the governing council’s nod, as per reports.

Quota for Kannadigas
Initially, BU reportedly proposed a 50% reservation in undergraduate admissions at NLSIU in return for its favour, a demand strongly opposed by the government. The university then left it for the administration to decide on a reservation policy for Karnataka students.
Under the horizontal reservation, NLSIU Bangalore admitted 60 students from within the state to its BA LLB (honours) programme, as per reports from the Times of India and the Indian Express . The university currently runs on a 23-acre campus and has been struggling with land, the reports suggested.
