Punjab education minister plans to set up committee to resolve higher education issues: Report

NEW DELHI: Punjab higher education minister Pargat Singh has given a proposal of setting up a committee and various sub-committees to resolve issues faced by the higher education sector, as per a report from the Times of India.

Singh asserted the importance of feedback from the ground level staff working, the report said.

The education minister held an interactive session with educationists wherein around 30 academicians including vice-chancellors and pro vice-chancellors, principals, and teachers across the state shared their vision, the report said.

Singh said that it is important to have a vibrant higher education sector and the college system should meet the aspirations of the youngsters while turning them into responsible citizens, the report said.

The education minister said that there is a huge need of short-term and long-term planning to achieve the goal of providing quality education and told that the government is taking action to fill up vacancies in the government colleges as soon as possible, the report said.

Some of the educationists suggested NCC to be added as a subject in the curriculum and said that education should be skill-oriented to which the minister said that he will consider it, the report said.

During the meeting, a discussion was also held on the malpractices of some private institutions such as putting out advertisements on enrolling non-attending students. Singh said that action will be taken against such colleges, the report said.
