Eminent scientist Sanghamitra Mohanty dies of COVID-19 in Odisha

NEW DELHI: Professor Sanghamitra Mohanty, former Vice Chancellor of North Odisha University, now Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University, died of COVID-19 on July 1 at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. She was 68 and was last dean and senior professor in the Faculty of Science, Sri Sri University.
Before joining Sri Sri University, Mohanty was professor and head of the department of computer science, Utkal University and a syndicate member of the same university. She was a former president of Odisha Bigyan Academy under the Department of Science and Technology of the Odisha government. She was also the director of the School of Women’s Studies of Utkal University from 2009 to 2011.

Mohanty pursued research constantly and published prolifically. Her fields of interest included artificial intelligence (AI), speech processing, image processing, natural language processing, fractal geometry and high energy physics. She had 13 intellectual property rights (IPRs) on Indian language technology solutions and over 180 research papers to her credit. She guided 68 students for their masters, including 11 for PhD.
She was a frequent invitee to institutions in India and abroad, including Princeton University, University of Nebraska Lincoln, as a visiting scientist and visiting professor.
“She was recognized, awarded, and felicitated by many organizations and institutions,” says a statement from Sri Sri University. “In recognition of her contribution to the field of engineering and technology, the Odisha government conferred her with the prestigious Samanta Chandrashekhar Award in 2012.”
