University of Sheffield opens applications for MSc in speech and natural language processing 2026. Learn AI, machine learning, and speech tech from September 2026

The University of Sheffield, UK, has opened applications for its MSc in Computer Science with speech and natural language processing, starting in September 2026. The programme is designed for students interested in the rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence, focusing on how machines understand and process human language and speech.
The course brings together multiple disciplines; computer science, machine learning, linguistics, and signal processing-to give students a strong foundation in the technologies behind today’s AI tools. From chatbots and voice assistants to real-time translation and sentiment analysis, the programme prepares graduates for careers at the forefront of AI innovation.
Professors and programme coordinators at the University describe the MSc as a balance between theory and practice, ensuring students not only learn the core algorithms and models but also gain hands-on experience applying them to real-world problems.
Applicants should hold a three or four-year bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as computer science, engineering, software development, or mathematics. International students must demonstrate English proficiency, typically with an IELTS score of 6.5 (minimum 6 in each component).
For 2026, tuition for overseas students is £32,905. The University is offering an automatic £3,000 scholarship for students who accept their offer by 7 July 2026. Additionally, early-bird accommodation discounts at Allen Court, up to £5,000 for selected countries including India, could reduce overall expenses by up to £8,000 for some students.

A major feature of the programme is its practical, hands-on approach. Students engage in lectures, lab sessions, and computational exercises that develop both theoretical knowledge and applied skills. By the end of the course, graduates will have gained expertise in machine learning, natural language processing, speech analysis, and digital signal processing on real-world data.
Roughly one-third of the course is dedicated to an individual dissertation, where students work closely with faculty on research topics such as speech recognition, NLP, or machine learning. This gives students an opportunity to dive deeper into a subject of interest and gain research experience that is highly valued in both industry and academia.
Graduates of the MSc will be prepared for careers in AI development, speech and language technology, data science, and research. The course explores the technologies behind advanced AI tools like ChatGPT and DeepSeek, helping students understand the theory and practice that powers these systems.
The programme is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), partially meeting the requirements for Chartered Information Technology Professional (CITP) and Chartered Engineer (CEng), offering students professional recognition alongside their academic credentials.
