7,732 students benefit from AICTE Pragati scholarships in 2020-21

NEW DELHI: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) disbursed Pragati scholarship to 7,723 girl students amounting to Rs 38.615 crore in 2020-21.

According to AICTE, the number of scholarships has seen a “multi-fold” rise since it was first launched in 2014. The scheme provides financial assistance to girls from marginalised sections in the northeast region and Jammu and Kashmir. Every year, students are provided Rs 50,000 to study in an AICTE-approved institution or courses.

Last year 244 girl students received the scholarship in Assam, a significant rise from 2019 when only one student received the financial benefits of Rs 50,000 per year from the state. In Tripura, 182 girl students from various institutions were also selected in 2020. A total of 515 girl students from AICTE-approved institutions in the northeast states were beneficiaries of the scheme. In Jammu and Kashmir, 480 students were awarded scholarships under this scheme.

In another scholarship scheme meant for students of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, the AICTE made substantial cuts after the pandemic hit the country last year. The maintenance allowance in the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme for Students of Union Territory of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh was reduced from Rs 50,000 to 20,000 per semester.

Among other Union Territories, 10 girls in Andaman and Nicobar islands, 62 from Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, and 11 from Ladakh have received the scholarship. Apart from these, students from Delhi, Chandigarh, Puducherry were also awarded scholarships.

In addition, the AICTE has distributed 6,656 scholarships to meritorious girl students from 20 other states of India including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Kerala.
