AIIMS excluded from list of medical colleges offering mandatory internships to FMGs: NMC

NEW DELHI: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has clarified that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has been excluded from the list of medical colleges offering the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) to Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) as it does not come under the commission’s purview. The commission has asked the medical councils not to allot a seat in AIIMS to any FMG for the mandatory internship. NMC’s announcement came after receiving representations from various FMGs regarding inclusion of AIIMS.

In February, the NMC issued a state-wise list of medical colleges or institutes recognized and approved for the 12-month CRMI along with the number of FMG seats. The commission said that it received various representations or queries regarding inclusion of AIIMS in the list.

“The above matter has been deliberated in the commission and it has been decided that All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) do not under the purview of National Medical Commission. Hence, AIIMS shall be excluded from the list published by the Commission,” said NMC in an official notice.

“In view of the above, all state medical councils are requested not to allot any Foreign Medical Graduates in AIIMS for conduct of internship in India,” the commission added.

Recently, FMGs requested NMC to look into the unavailability of internship seats in medical colleges across the country. Upon receiving the information from the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) that there are only 42 seats in three medical colleges for internships of FMGs, they visited the council but didn’t get any response. Prior to this, FMGs in Rajasthan staged a protest against the limited number of internships seats.

Medical students who have completed their MBBS degree in foreign institutes recognised by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) are required to appear in the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) to be eligible to practice medicine in India. They will also have to complete the mandatory medical internship after clearing the FMGE exam.
