NIRF 2025: BHU’s dental college ranking withdrawn after confusion over double entry

The Faculty of Dental Sciences at Banaras Hindu University, which had appeared twice in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF 2025) under the top dental colleges in India, has now been withdrawn from the list.

The ministry of education (MoE) has published the NIRF Indian rankings 2025 on September 4. In the dental category, introduced in 2020, BHU was featured at rank 15 under the entry "Banaras Hindu University" and again at rank 18 under the name "Faculty of Dental Sciences, Institute of Medical Sciences".

However, BHU has only one dental college – Faculty of Dental Sciences – which is part of the Institute of Medical Sciences. Interestingly, both the entries had two different sets of data – one filed under BHU’s name and another by the Faculty of Dental Sciences itself.

While some of the figures matched in both entries, the numbers differed widely on most academic indicators, especially on placements and salary figures.

Careers360 compared both the BHU and Faculty of Dental Sciences’ NIRF scores and found that the teaching and graduate outcome (GO) scores of the dental college were much higher compared to the university. However, BHU was allotted a much higher score under the research practice and perception categories – placing it at rank 15 and pushing the Faculty of Dental Sciences to rank 18.

BHU Dental sciences rank is drawn from NIRF. The Faculty of Dental Sciences, Institute of Medical Sciences, is a constituent unit of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU). BHU and the Faculty of Dental Sciences, Institute of Medical Sciences, have submitted the data independently with different placement data.

BHU dental college ranking removed from NIRF India rankings 2025.

A professor at the Faculty of Dental Sciences, BHU told Careers360 , on condition of anonymity: "We had sent data directly to NIRF and then sent the same data to Banaras Hindu University which again submitted. We had sent the same data to both and are not sure how the changes happened. We are also inquiring into this."

Currently, the NIRF dental rankings 2025 has BHU in the list and the data submitted by the Faculty of Dental Sciences has been removed.
