CBSE has classified elective subjects like Punjabi, Web Application, Bhutia, Tamang, Urdu, Japanese etc as minor subjects, and core subjects as Mathematics, Physics, Economics, History, Chemistry among others as major subjects. There are a total of 9 major subjects in class 10, and in class 12 there are a total of 19 major subjects.
There are a total of 66 minor subjects in class 10, and 95 in class 12. “CBSE is offering 114 subjects in class 12, and 75 subjects in class 10, meaning , CBSE has to conduct a total examination of 189 subjects in total. If the examination of all subjects is conducted, then the entire duration of the examination would be about 40 to 45 days. Minimum. Therefore to avoid the learning loss of the students, CBSE has divided the subjects into two parts, i.e major and minor. As major subjects are offered by almost all the affiliated schools hence exams of these subjects will be conducted by fixing the datesheet as done earlier,” CBSE had earlier said in a circular.
