Delhi University: 3,900 teaching posts vacant in colleges; Most vacancies at Gargi College

New Delhi: Over 3,900 teaching posts are vacant in constituent colleges of the University of Delhi and over 3000 teachers are presently working on an ad-hoc basis against those vacant posts, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday. Union Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar gave the information in a written response to a question in the House.

"A total number of 3,959 of teaching posts are vacant and 3,047 teachers are presently working on an ad-hoc basis against those vacant teaching posts in all the constituent colleges of the University of Delhi," Sarkar said. The maximum number of vacant teaching posts are in Gargi College (216) followed by Janki Devi Memorial College (169), Ramjas College (143), Deshbandhu College (132) and Sri Venkateswara College (131).

Delhi University currently has 50.85 percent teaching positions and 68.81 percent non-teaching posts vacant, said a parliamentary committee report tabled in Rajya Sabha earlier this month. While union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan informed Lok Sabha that more than 13,000 teachers positions are lying vacant in the central educational institutions. In central universities, only 7,839 posts out of the 16,649 posts for reserved categories were filled, he added.

Due to the shortage of staff, DU has been inconsistent with submitting audit reports within the stipulated time. According to the panel, DU has submitted the annual report and audit accounts before the ministry of education on time only once in the last 30 years.

Meanwhile, at the Delhi University’s Executive Council (EC) meeting held on December 17, the council members urged the DU vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh that the non-teaching contractual employees of the university should be exempted from preliminary tests of recruitment.

The council also decided to have scholars from Germany, the United States and France teaching its students.
