Gujarat to open English medium schools for dropouts due to COVID-19: Report
The state education department has decided to open English medium schools for students who dropped out of self-financed private schools.

NEW DELHI: The state education department of Gujarat has decided to open English medium schools for students who dropped out of self-financed private schools due to COVID-19, according to a Times of India report.
Sources in the state education department told TOI: “Presently, about 98% of government-run schools are Gujarati-medium ones. Many English-medium students had to quit their studies in private schools due to financial reasons and join Gujarati medium school or drop out of schooling. These new schools are aimed at giving a breather to these children”.

Education will be free of cost in these schools, like other government-run schools, the report added.
Since March 2020 around 5 lakh students in Gujarat have dropped out of private schools and 2.82 lakh students dropped out in the academic year 2020-21, as per the state's education department record.

The government is collecting data at the district level to find the number of students who dropped out of schools. “Based on this data, the government will find out how many schools are to be set up and the number of teaching staff required,” the report said.
