IIB-B: Project evergreen is the largest alumni-led student housing infrastructure initiative in India, backed by nearly 2700 alumni donors, close to 100 alumni volunteers and over 25 corporate partners.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has announced the completion and operationalisation of Project Evergreen, a fully alumni-led initiative that has expanded student housing infrastructure on campus.
As per the institute, the project has delivered three new hostels comprising 848 rooms and 1127 beds, spread across 370000 sq ft, after raising Rs 200 crore through alumni and corporate contributions.
The institute said Project Evergreen is the largest alumni-led student housing infrastructure initiative in India, backed by nearly 2700 alumni donors, close to 100 alumni volunteers and over 25 corporate partners. Contributions ranged from Rs 10 crore to Rs 1,000, including a symbolic Rs 100 donation from a current student.
IIT Bombay’s alumni-led campus upgrade
“Project Evergreen began as a simple conversation between a small group of alumni volunteers Prof Chaudhuri,” the release noted.
IIT Bombay said that the alumni leaders Narayan Sundaresan, led the construction, and Kirat Patel, developed the fundraising model.
“The initial response was very encouraging,” Patel said in the press release.
“We began with a Rs 4-5 crore design phase supported by 26 charter donors. Phase two depended on our belief that we could raise the full construction cost—and the alumni community proved us right,” he added.
The institute also said the new housing complex has received Indian Green Building Council Gold Certification (IGBC) Gold certification under the Green Homes Rating System, marking the first campus building to secure the recognition.

Subash Chaudhuri, former IIT Bombay director, said in the press release that the institute's infrastructure “needed urgent upgrades,” adding that the project reflected “unprecedented scale, ambition, and collaboration.” He said the new hostels are already operational and supporting campus life.
IIT Bombay director Shireesh Kedare said the initiative shows what can be achieved when alumni and institutions collaborate with purpose. “Project Evergreen is more than infrastructure—it is a living example of nation-building,” he said.
