Jamia Millia Islamia to establish law, dental and medical sciences departments

Droupadi Murmu, as the visitor of JMI, has approved amendments to statute 20, enabling the establishment of these departments.
NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is expanding its academic offerings with the establishment of three new departments. These three departments include the department of law under the faculty of law, the department of dental sciences and department of medical sciences under the faculty of dentistry.
As per the institute, this expansion marks a significant development for JMI, offering students new avenues for academic pursuit in the fields of law, dentistry, and medical sciences. It is expected to further enhance the university's reputation as a leading centre for education and research in India.
According to the amended statute 20, each faculty will have such departments as may be assigned to it by the ordinances and no department will be established or abolished except by this statute.
The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in her capacity as the visitor of JMI, has approved amendments to the existing statute 20, paving the way for the creation of these departments. This approval was conveyed by the ministry of education (department of higher education) vide its letter no. 6-11/2022-CU 2 dated March 6, 2024.
The amended statute 20 as approved would be read as shown in the annexure. Annexure to statute 20 as amended vide ministry of education will have 48 departments of studies and some of them are given in the table below.
