Maharashtra to promote students of Classes 1 to 8 without exams

NEW DELHI : The Maharashtra Government has decided to promote all students of Classes 1 to 8 under the Maharashtra State Board without examinations. Education minister Varsha Gaikwad said that a decision on Classes 9 and 11 examinations will be conveyed soon.
The decision was taken as COVID-19 cases continued to rise in the state that leads the most number of COVID-19 cases in the country.
Gaikwad, through her official social media handle, said: “In view of the ongoing situation due to COVID-19, all state board students across Maharashtra state from Class 1 to Class 8 will be promoted to the next class without any examinations. A decision regarding students of Classes 9 and 11 will soon be taken.”
Tamil Nadu Government had taken a similar decision by promoting students of Classes 9 to 11 without exams. The decision was upheld by the Madras High Court despite protests from a section of teachers.
States have been closing schools as COVID-19 cases continued to increase in different parts of the country. Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh , over the week, extended school closures to mid-April and Karnataka suspended classes for students in Bengaluru.
