MCI BoG approves DNB to be at par with MD/MS and DM/MCh

NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 14: The Board of Governors (BoG) in supersession of the Medical Council of India (MCI) have introduced “Minimum Qualification for Teachers in Medical Institutions (Amendment) Regulations, 2018” which clarifies that DNB (Broad Specialities) is equivalent to MD and MS courses while the DNB (Super Specialities) is at par with DM and MCh courses considering the eligibility criteria laid down by the governing bodies are fulfilled.
The changes introduced through the Gazette of India are effective from October 31. Check below the copy of the regulation which mentions the minimum requirements for the determination of the equivalency-
Scope for DNB holders in teaching
With the introduction of regulation, BoG has further specified that DNB holders can now teach as Professors/Addl Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors. The criteria for these courses can be checked below-

Postgraduate qualification (MD/MS/DNB) in the concerned subject and as per these Regulations. |
As Assistant Professor in the subject for four years in a permitted/approved/recognized medical college/institution with two Research Publications in Indexed Journals as the first Author or as the corresponding author. |

Three years Junior Resident in a recognized/permitted medical college in the concerned subject and one year as Senior Resident in the concerned subject in a recognized/Permitted medical college. In case of DNB candidate equated to MD/MS in terms of clause 4A of Schedule– I, in addition to three year teaching experience in the subject as Resident /Registrar / Demonstrator/ Tutor / or work experience gained during DNB training, one year as Senior Resident in the concerned subject in a recognized/Permitted medical college. |

Positive Change for DNB holders
The new changes will be beneficial for DNB doctors especially those who obtain their training at medical colleges and postgraduate qualification from the National Board of Examinations (NBE). Now, DNB degree holders who have worked in over 100 bed broad specialities and super specialities private hospitals will be eligible for faculty positions considering they have worked for additional one year as a senior resident in MCI recognised/permitted institutions. Earlier, these degree holders were not considered at par with doctors who have completed MD/MS.
