Download nowNEW DELHI: The Supreme Court will today hear the pleas challenging the applicability of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) criteria of Rs 8 lakh annual income for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test postgraduate (NEET PG 2022) admissions. The petition was filed last year by medical aspirants challenging the 10% EWS reservation in the All India Quota (AIQ) for the NEET PG counselling.

A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and PS Narasimha said earlier that the matter needs to be heard by a combination of three-judge bench.
On February 14, the top court had refused to entertain a plea seeking clarification on the applicability of EWS criteria of Rs eight lakh in NEET-PG 2022-23 saying it is seized of the matter and whatever it decides will be applicable.

On January 7, the Supreme Court upheld the validity of the OBC quota in both NEET PG, NEET UG 2021. It observed that the validity of the criteria determined by the Pandey committee for identifying the EWS prospectively for the future be subject to the final results of the petition. The top court had scheduled the final hearing in March this year, which later got postponed to July due to the summer vacation.
