Online Classes: IIT Bombay alumni donate Rs 1.5 cr for laptops, internet

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay's batch of 1994 donated Rs 1.25 crore for laptops and broadband for students who will be taking online classes in the next academic year.
IIT Bombay, which will hold classes online due to the coronavirus outbreak, will provide laptops and internet for the students in need for the upcoming online classes. The new session of IIT Bombay will begin from August 10. Considering, not all students are equipped to access online classes, the institute had initiated a fundraiser.
“IIT Bombay does acknowledge the fact that this also calls for certain IT requirements (laptops and data cards) for our students to attend virtual classes. A sizeable population of our students may not have the financial capability to afford the IT infrastructure,” said an official statement.
The institute has also received a grant of Rs 2.35 crore from the IIT Bombay Heritage Foundation (IITBHF). A target of Rs 5 crore has been set to help all the disadvantaged students. The fund will be utilized to purchase 500 laptop computers and broadband support for 500 undergraduate students.
Appreciating the contribution of the alumni, Subhasis Chaudhuri, director of IIT Bombay said, “I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the Batch of 1994 who have come together and made a very timely contribution to support the IT infrastructure requirements of our students to have access to online learning,”
Seeking support for the initiative, Chaudhuri further urged alumni to donate generously to help the deprived students access education amid the pandemic.
