PM Modi to virtually lay foundation stone of 3 DU buildings on June 30

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually lay the foundation stone of three buildings of the Delhi University on June 30 and release a set of coffee table books, university officials said on Tuesday. These buildings are for the faculty of technology, a computer centre and an academic block, and these will be 7+1 storeyed with state-of-the-art infrastructure, they said. "The prime minister will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony of centenary celebrations of the Delhi University (DU) on June 30. Prime Minister Modi will lay the foundation stone of three new buildings virtually," Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh said. Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan will be the guest of honour for the ceremony.

Talking to PTI, DU South Campus Director Prakash Singh said the prime minister will also release three coffee table books, including a logo book. "The three buildings for which the prime minister will lay foundation stone are the computer centre and the faculty of technology (North Campus) and academic block at Maurice Nagar. These buildings would be completed in the next two years," he said.

Prakash Singh said the university has a computer centre but it is only two-storeyed. "We have plans to build a new computer centre. The building will be built with funds given by the Centre as part of the Institutions of Eminence (IoE) scheme. The second building would be the faculty of technology," he said.

"The prime minister will also launch three coffee table books, including a logo book which will have logos of various colleges and their motto. One will have the activities planned for the entire year and the other will have our historical achievements," Prakash Singh said.

The DU has introduced B.Tech programmes from the upcoming academic session with a capacity of 360 students. The building for the faculty of technology will cater to them. For the closing ceremony, an exhibition on the journey of 100 years of the university would be organised in the basement of the Multipurpose Hall. The preparation for the event is in full swing and Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh is monitoring all the activities, an official said. In this regard, a meeting on advance security liaison was organised on Tuesday under the chairmanship of the vice chancellor. The vice chancellor also held separate meetings with the members of the academic and executive councils of the university.

"The university administration is fully active regarding the proposed visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Delhi University on June 30," the official said. The vice chancellor also took stock of the preparations by visiting the Multipurpose Hall of DU's sports complex and other important places along with the officials. The meeting held on advance security liaison "was also attended by the chairpersons of various committees constituted for the closing ceremony, concerned government officials related to traffic, police, security etc. and various senior officials of the university", the official informed.
