The decision follows a surge in air pollution, with the district recording “Very Poor” air quality in recent days. Students and parents can opt for online classes to protect their health while continuing their education.
The Deputy Commissioner of Gurugram has announced that all schools in the district will conduct classes for students up to Class 5 in a hybrid format, combining offline and online modes, following directions from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).
The order, issued by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Gurugram, cites the activation of Stage 3 (Severe Air Quality) measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in the Delhi-NCR region. The decision comes after the district recorded "Very Poor" air quality levels in recent days.
“In view of the deteriorating air quality and as per the directions of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) under Stage-III (Severe Air Quality), classes for students up to Class V in all schools of Gurugram district will now be conducted in Hybrid Mode — both Offline and Online (wherever feasible),” the Deputy Commissioner Gurugram posted on X.
Students and their guardians have the discretion to choose online classes wherever this mode is available. The decision is aimed at ensuring continuity in education while addressing the health concerns associated with high air pollution levels in the district.
Pollution spike causes concern
The recent rise in pollution has been attributed to calm winds, a stable atmosphere, and unfavourable weather conditions, which allowed pollutants to accumulate close to the ground, according to the CAQM.
Similar conditions in Delhi have pushed the Air Quality Index (AQI) into the “Severe” category in recent days, prompting authorities to invoke Stage 3 GRAP measures. The increase in pollution has also triggered public concern, with students and parents staging protests in Delhi.
Demonstrations took place at India Gate and outside government offices, where participants demanded urgent action to ensure clean air and protect public health, highlighting the risks posed to children and vulnerable groups.
