Standalone PG institutes, non-teaching hospitals not entitled to conduct internship for FMGs: NMC

NEW DELHI : The National Medical Commission (NMC) has clarified that standalone PG institutes and non-teaching hospitals are not entitled to conduct internships for Foreign Medical Graduates. The Commission has issued a clarification on internship of foreign medical graduates and allocation of medical colleges to FMG for doing internship.

“State Medical Councils are required to allot seats to FMGs, who have qualified FMG exam, in medical colleges only. Foreign medical graduates may be posted first in colleges which have been newly opened and have yet to be recognized. A state-wise list of medical colleges, institutes which are approved/recognized by the Commission has already been shared with state medical councils. Accordingly, standalone PG institutes imparting DNB training DNB-PDCET and non-teaching hospitals are not entitled to conduct Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship after the publication of NMC’s CRMI regulations 2021,” said an official notification from NMC.

NMC has published Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship Regulations 2021 and Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021. According to FMGL regulations , foreign medical graduates are required to undergo supervised internship in India for a minimum term of twelve months, after applying for it to the Commission.

Whereas, as per the CRMI regulations, FMGs are required to do internship and can do it only in the same medical colleges or institutions approved for providing CRMI to Indian medical graduates and the allocation of medical colleges to FMGs will be done by the State Medical Council only.

“Further, Indian citizens (including overseas Indian citizens) who are Foreign Medical Graduates and do not fall under the purview of the National Medical Commission (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate) Regulations, 2021, shall be regulated by the provisions of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 and are required to complete CRMI in India if they have not undergone such practical training after obtaining such gratification as may be required by the rules and regulations in force in the country granting such qualification or has not undergone any practical training in that country,” NMC notification added.
