NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court dismissed a petition challenging the conduct of CLAT 2020 in online mode today.

According to Livelaw.in the petitioners wanted the examination to be conducted in offline mode.

“Advocate Mitul Jain had submitted to the Bench that the move to not have specific centres to conduct CLAT, would effectively not allow students who do not have access to a computer system to sit for the admission test”, the report said.

The report said that the Supreme Court bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao dismissed the plea, observing that the “court had seen many different kinds of complaints regarding CLAT over the years”.

CLAT was originally scheduled to be conducted in offline mode. However, the Consortium of National Law Universities, the conducting body of CLAT 2020, switched from offline to online mode of conduct due to the COVID-19 breakout.

The decision was taken as it was found difficult to conduct offline exam as the lockdown would affect the handling of question papers and answer scripts.

The Consortium also rejected online remote proctored mode due to concerns regarding transparency and access to computers, power and internet.

CLAT 2020 will be conducted across 203 cities. To ensure the safety of the candidates, the consortium has issued exam day guidelines for the candidates. According to the CLAT2020 guidelines the computer-based test will be held, adhering to social distancing norms.
