NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a show cause notice to 18 medical colleges for failing to comply with anti-ragging regulations, 2009. As per the official notice, the UGC has observed that many colleges have not obtained anti-ragging undertakings from students and their parents, as required by the regulations.
As per UGC, this undertaking is a preventive measure aimed at ensuring a ragging-free environment within educational institutions. In its notice, UGC highlighted that securing the anti-ragging undertakings at the time of admission and at the beginning of each academic year is a non-negotiable requirement.
The UGC official notice read, “The failure to secure these undertakings not only constitutes non-compliance with the regulations but also puts the well-being and safety of the students at risk.”
The UGC has directed the ant-ragging non-compliant medical colleges to submit a written explanation within seven days of receiving the show cause notice. As per UGC, the non-compliant institutions are required to provide the reasons for their failure to secure these undertakings. Additionally, non-compliant colleges have been asked to outline the corrective steps they plan to implement immediately.
As per the UGC official notice, failure to provide a satisfactory response within the given time frame may lead to strict action, including penalties and other corrective measures as per the anti-ragging regulations, 2009. UGC has urged institutions to treat this matter with the utmost priority to prevent any legal or regulatory repercussions.
The UGC has called for the establishment of anti-ragging committees, squads, and cells within institutions. Additionally, colleges are required to install CCTV cameras, conduct awareness workshops, and implement stringent monitoring mechanisms to curb ragging-related incidents. To enhance compliance, UGC has made it mandatory for students and their parents to submit an online anti-ragging undertaking every academic year.
In an effort to create awareness, UGC has directed HEIs to prominently display anti-ragging posters in various locations, including admission centers, hostels, libraries, and canteens. The UGC has also recommended surprise inspections of student accommodations and common areas.
The following colleges have been listed as non-compliant with UGC's anti-ragging regulations, as per the official notice.
