UP government proposes 14 new medical colleges adding 1,400 MBBS seats

Uttar Pradesh medical education department has applied for NMC approval for increase in medical colleges and seats.
NEW DELHI : The Uttar Pradesh government has proposed 14 new medical colleges in the state adding 1,400 MBBS seats for the academic year 2024-25, the department of medical education informed via social media. The proposal will help enhance the medical education in UP, it said.
The state government has sent the application to increase the number of colleges and MBBS seats to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for its approval. Once NMC gives its nod, 1,400 more seats will be added to the current 8,000 MBBS seats in the state after the campuses have undergone physical verification.
The new medical colleges are going to be established in districts such as Kanpur Dehat, Lalitpur, Kaushambi, and others in the state. The medical education department has also initiated the process for appointing faculty members, including the principal, in the proposed new colleges.

In March last year, the medical education department added 1,300 MBBS seats and opened 13 new medical colleges in the state. The Department of Medical Education, Uttar Pradesh has announced to add 1,300 MBBS seats in government medical colleges in the state. Moreover, 13 new medical colleges will begin the first academic session from this year 2023-24.
There are 65 medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh including 35 government and 30 private, in 59 districts, a medical education officer told Careers360 last year.
Moreover, there has been an 82 percent increase in the number of medical colleges in the country, from 387 before 2014 to 704 July till last year, union health and family welfare minister Mansukh Mandaviya told Parliament. There has also been a 110-per cent increase in the number of MBBS seats, from 51,348 to 1,07,948, in the same period, he said.
