Vice President Venkaiah Naidu confers ‘South Asia Legal Education Excellence Award’

NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 17: Schools Of Law of Amity Group of Universities was conferred with ‘South Asia Legal Education Excellence Award 2018’ by the Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu during Tenth Law Teacher’s Day.

Law Teachers’ Day is jointly organized by Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) and Menon Institute of Legal Advocacy Training (MILAT) since 2009, for honouring law teachers and law schools with felicitations and awards. This year’s ceremony was supported by The Bar Association of India.

Accepting the award, Dr. Ashok K Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Group of Education said, “the credit for this prestigious award goes to the Joint Directors, the faculty members and students of Amity Law School. This achievement is a result of collaborative efforts and hard work. Amity is the first law school in the country to receive this award.” He shared that such recognitions encourage the vision to be the best law school globally. Dr. Chauhan further informed that presently, there are 8500 students pursuing LLB in Amity, 500 students pursuing LLM and more than 100 enrolled in PhD programmes.

Conferring the Awards, the vice-president said that legal education has undergone through a dramatic transformation in recent times and it is not just limited to lawyers, but present time calls for even common people to gain the basic understanding of laws. He advised the law students to be the agent of change and effectively play the role of social engineers by imbibing holistic knowledge of not just law but also economics, markets, subsidiary elements of trade, international trade etc. He raised concerns over declining morals and lack of ethics amongst students and advised that moral science should be reintroduced in the school education system. Mr. Naidu encouraged the legal professionals to conduct CSR activities like providing legal aid to underprivileged and create legal awareness amongst people. Legal advocates can also offer their services to teach at law institutes, he said.

Other awardees who were recognized during the award ceremony include Prof R Venkata Rao of the National Law School of India University, Bangalore who bagged ‘Prof N R Madhava Menon Best Law Teacher Award 2018’; Tribhuvan University School of Law, Kathmandu, Nepal, Empowerment Through Law of Common People (ELCOP), Dhaka, Bangladesh and Colombo University, Department of Law, Sri Lanka who were conferred upon ‘South Asian Legal Education Excellence Award’; and Law students of Bhargavi Kannan, School of Excellence, Ambedkar University, Chennai and Sanya Darakhshan Kishwar, School of Law, Central University, Gaya, Bihar who were awarded with Plate of Honor and Scholarship amount of 50,000$.
