50 students of 2 Mumbai University colleges declared fail despite taking semester exam

NEW DELHI: As many as 50 students pursuing BCom and BSc courses in two Mumbai colleges were declared “failed” after being marked absent for the exams they took, as per a report in Mid-day newspaper. The students belonged to the colleges of Ulhasnagar in Mumbai, which are affiliated to the Mumbai University.

The university looked into the issue and resolved it by releasing the amended results, the report stated. However, it took a lot of intervention from the political outfits and college administration to compel the Mumbai University to probe the matter and redress it, the report said.

In the report, it was stated that out of the 50 students who landed in a tight spot, 11 of them had been enrolled in the BSc course at RK Talreja college of Ulhasnagar, while three of them were commerce students. 36 others belonged to the Chandibai Himathmal Mansukhani college, who were also among the sufferers, it said.

The colleges declared the results last week on March 10, 2023 and the amended results including the marks of the affected students was published a week later on March 18 after a probe into the matter was conducted.

A student studying at Chandibai Himathmal Mansukhani college told the Mid-day newspaper: “The results have just been rectified, but who is responsible for the anxiety and trauma we have gone through the entire week? Some seniors told us that if the results are not rectified, we will have to apply for re-exams. I was under a tremendous amount of stress until my college assured me the rectification would be done. Every time there is some problem or the other.”

The report added that a Mumbai University official, on condition of anonymity, said: ‘There was some misunderstanding from a certain exam centre maybe. We are not sure. However, after the cases came to us, the exam attendance sheets were checked and following their verification, the results were corrected. Students facing any such issue must immediately bring this to our notice.”
