Anna University suggests 60:40 ratio in external, internal exams: Report

NEW DELHI: Anna University has suggested a change in the ratio of external and internal exams for the university’s engineering colleges, affiliated colleges, autonomous colleges and the university departments. The university suggested setting a 60:40 distribution for the semester exam(external) and the department level tests (internal), reported the Times of India.

According to the report, the university will conduct theory and internal exams of 100 marks each. The score of the candidates will be converted to 60 marks in theory and the score of internal exam to 40 marks. The final score will be a total of both external and internal exams.

Currently, the university’s affiliated colleges have an 80:20 ratio for external and internal marks, autonomous colleges and university departments follow 60%:40% and 50%:50% weightage for semester exams and internal tests.

The university proposed the new plans to set a 60 :40 weightage during the academic council meeting held last week. It proposed 60% weightage for theory and 40% for practical papers in all engineering courses. The university proposed a 50:50 ratio for papers with both theory and practical components for external and internal exams.

Time of India quoted, Professors from Anna University saying that the proposal would only help private colleges to increase pass percentage and, in turn, will help their admissions. "The university needs to strengthen continuous assessment and semester exams to improve the quality. The uniformity in the weightage is not the right move in the direction of improving quality," a principal from an autonomous college said, reported TOI.
