Assam Cabinet approves merger of SEBA, AHSEC into a single board

NEW DELHI: Assam Cabinet has approved the merger of the Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) and Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) into one single board. The merged board will be called ‘Assam State School Education Board' (ASSEB).

The SEBA has been conducting the Class 10 exams and AHSEC was given the responsibility for holding Class 12 board examinations.

“To develop, regulate and supervise the standards and quality of School Education, the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) and Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, Assam (AHSEC) to be merged and constituted as the Assam State School Education Board' (ASSEB),” the official statement read.

The cabinet has approved the Assam Secondary Education (Government Schools) Service (2nd Amendment) Rules, 2023 and the Assam Secondary Education (Provincialised Schools) Service (2nd Amendment) Rules, 2023.

As per the amendment, the cabinet has approved for streamlining the recruitment procedure of graduate and postgraduate teachers, including subject teacher in vocational subjects.

“The amended rules seek to maintain the pupil-teacher ratio, ensure optimum utilisation of manpower for effective academic support to students and prevention of adverse effect on academic activities at Secondary level in Provincialised/ Government Schools,” the state government said.

On June 6, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the plan to merge SEBA and AHSEC. The decision was taken by the state in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). “The employees employed for SEBA will not lose their job,” he had said.
