CBSE to move to new education format next year: Nidhi Chhibber

NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to make a migration to a new education format from the next academic year.

The board will be issuing a directive to all CBSE affiliated schools to prepare for the change from the current academic system to a more graded one that will be in line with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). The system will be shifting from the 10+2 system to the 5+3+3+4 system.

The CBSE chairperson, Nidhi Chhibber, said that an important feature in the new education system will be an inclusion of the age group 3 to 6 years in the formal academic system. "Many CBSE schools already are into this. They have their pre-nurseries and preparatory schools. Now, they will come into the formal CBSE system as well," she said to TOI.

The NEP has spilt the schooling system into four stages- foundational stage for ages 3 to 8 years; preparatory stage from classes 3 to 5; middle stage being for classes 6 to 8 and secondary stage from classes 9 to 12. The education policy document states that the board exams for classes 10 and 12 will continue, however, the existing system of board and entrance system will be reformed to remove the need for coaching classes.

"To eliminate the 'high stakes' aspect of board exams, all students will be allowed to take board exams up to two occasions during any given school year, one main examination and one for improvement, if desired," the NEP document states.

"Another important component of the NEP mandate is creation of school registry, teacher registry and student registry to track the development of these three resources throughout the various stages of schooling. We will be initiating this exercise very soon,'' said Chhibber, at the CBSE Sahodaya schools conference for over 800 CBSE schools.
