NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education has instructed all schools to allow students who have failed in Class 9 and Class 11, an opportunity to take school-based retests. The board is providing the opportunity as a “one-time” measure and students will be given the chance irrespective of the number of subjects they have failed in.

Schools have been given the option of conducting online, offline or “innovative tests”, based on which students can be promoted to the next level, said a notice issued by the board. All CBSE-affiliated schools will provide the opportunity to all the failed students of class 9 and 11 to appear in the school-based test.

Union human resource development minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ wrote on Twitter : “All CBSC schools are being directed to provide an opportunity to all those children who have failed in 9th and 11th to take the test in online/offline/innovative way.”

The board has taken the decision after receiving queries from parents and students who are already under stress due to ongoing COVID-19 crisis. CBSE has issued a notice to all its affiliated schools and has asked them to inform the students prior to holding the test.

The CBSE notice states that this one-time opportunity is being extended only in the current year in view of the unprecedented conditions of COVID-19.
