CUET against cardinal principle of social justice, says John Brittas CPI(M) MP in Rajya Sabha

NEW DELHI: John Brittas, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP from Kerala, while talking about Common University Entrance Test (CUET) during the Zero hour in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, April 5, said that the Union government took a unilateral decision on education without conducting a discussion with states although education is on the concurrent list.

"Education is in the concurrent list. The government which hops on federalism takes unilateral decisions in the field of education. Sir, our education system is tampered with half-baked ideas. There is no meaningful discussion with states or the stakeholders.." Brittas said. He further questioned the merit of the CUET exam and said that UGC had decided to hold the CUET exam and Class 12 marks will not be considered for admission into undergraduate programmes in central universities .

According to Brittas, the CUET exam does not consider students from the weakest section in India as they cannot afford coaching by paying a huge amount as fees. He pointed out that the CUET exam is an advantage to well-to-do students.

"The CUET is against the cardinal principle of social justice," said Brittas. He also mentioned that CET exam ignores the distinct character of each university.
