NEW DELHI: The Common University Entrance Test (CUET 2025) is set to undergo a major rejig, the University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman M Jagadesh Kumar said while announcing that the revised draft guidelines for admission into undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses at 283 universities will be issued soon.
The statutory body had set up an expert committee to review the conduct of CUET UG and CUET PG and to improve the examination process. The UGC chief said that the draft guidelines for CUET 2025 will be notified soon and suggestions from teachers, students, parents, and institutions will be considered for issuing the final revised guidelines for the entrance exam.
The NTA conducted the CUET 2024 exam in hybrid mode for the first time. However, the exam may shift back to the computer-based test (CBT) mode from next year onwards, according to the Times of India report.
In the first edition of the CUET exam in 2022, the UG entrance exam was marred by technical glitches which led to a lot of confusion among students who sat for the maiden exam. CUET is a standardised entrance exam covering 63 subjects for admission to around 283 institutions, including central universities, state universities, deemed universities. Since the exam is conducted in multiple shifts, the NTA uses a normalisation method to calculate the scores.
The UGC chairman announced that the decision to conduct the exam in hybrid mode was taken to encourage more participation from rural areas and ensure equal opportunities for all aspirants. However, the exam was cancelled in the Delhi exam centre a night before the exam citing logistical reasons.
“Last year, the number of registered candidates for CUET was 13,47,820. By encouraging universities to adopt a single, national-level entrance test, CUET has streamlined admissions, reduced the reliance on varying cut-offs, and made the admission process transparent and technology-driven," he said.
