Delhi government launches 'Mission Kayakalp' to upgrade infrastructure in schools

The chief minister Rekha Gupta said the initiative aims to transform government schools into modern, clean, and inspiring learning spaces rather than limiting them to centres of education.
NEW DELHI: The Delhi government launched 'Mission Kayakalp' to upgrade infrastructure in government schools, with repairs, modern laboratories, clean drinking water facilities and campus improvements planned across districts to create safer and better learning spaces for students. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the initiative aims to transform government schools into modern, clean and inspiring learning spaces rather than limiting them to centres of education.
She said the programme is being implemented with support from district administrations, the Education Department, CSR initiatives, social organisations, market associations and local communities, adding that public participation is helping speed up the transformation of school infrastructure.
According to a statement, the initiative focuses on repairing school buildings, painting and whitewashing walls, waterproofing, improving rooftop drainage, renovating toilets, installing RO plants and water coolers, modernising science laboratories, developing facilities for children with special needs and increasing greenery on campuses.
It said work has already been completed or is underway in government schools across North, South, West, North-East and Outer North districts. In the North district, a sensory park for children with special needs has been renovated, RO plants and water coolers installed and a physics laboratory modernised in selected schools, it said.

Delhi schools under repair
Schools in Mehrauli and Qutub Mehrauli have undergone repairs to toilets, roofs and damaged plaster, repainting of buildings, installation of water coolers and plantation drives, it read.
In West Delhi, schools in Mohan Garden and Janakpuri are being upgraded with roof repairs, waterproofing, rainwater harvesting systems, sewer line improvements, electrical works and better drinking water facilities, it added.
The statement said schools in Gokalpur and Shahdara have been provided renovated toilets, repaired buildings, fresh paint, water coolers, plantation and improved library facilities.
Gupta said several schools have already witnessed visible changes under the programme, with improved infrastructure replacing dilapidated buildings and inadequate facilities. She said the government would continue strengthening school infrastructure to provide students with a better learning environment.
